Staging 101 - Tip #1 De-Personalize

Updated: Sep 27, 2018

Hi! Today I want to talk to you about staging your home and getting it ready for sale. We are selling our house right now and we've just had to do the same process ourselves so I thought it would call the series staging 101 and give you some tips on how you can make your home more appealing to a broad range of buyers.

Today's tip: De-Personalize Your Space

What I mean by that is, picture Grandma or Mom's stairwell and all the family pictures that are up and down the stairs.... that may be totally awesome, but when you're selling your home maybe NOT so awesome.

You want to be able to have buyers come into your space and envision themselves living there, and the more personal items you have everywhere the harder it is for them to do that.

So in the kitchen if you have your fridge covered with your kids art and more pictures you will want to take those down. Another one to remove that might not be so obvious is if you have things that are very personal to you, that you think are amazing, but maybe slightly controversial to a majority of people.

An example of that would be, let's say you're a hunter and you have a Elk head in your den. Now if you live in Texas, maybe that's not so controversial, and it would be totally fine. But if you live in other parts of the country, maybe that would be offensive to some people and what you don't want to have happen is someone to love your house and think that it could work perfectly for them, but because of that one offensive thing, they that's all they talk about and how they just can't have it because of that. So you don't want to have that happen! So, walk through your house, think about it from a buyer's perspective and pretend if you were total stranger...Could you envision yourself living in the house? Or maybe even ask a friend to come over and give you some critical feedback on that.
