A Healthy Home in 5 simple Steps

Did you know that being healthy includes more than diet and exercise? Now more than ever people are realizing that our home environment plays an integral part to our overall wellness. Here are 5 simple ways you can start incorporating overall well being into your home today.




1) Improve your AIR quality

Did you know that according to the EPA the air quality inside our homes can be 2-5x's more polluted than the air outside?  And research indicates people spend as much as 90% of their time indoors!   Indoor  pollutants can trigger respiratory problems and other issues.   From the chemicals we use to clean our homes, to toxins that are stuck to our shoes from the outside world, our homes can become a polluted place without us even being aware. People with chronic illnesses can be especially sensitive to these toxins so improving air quality is an important step to take to begin healing our bodies and feeling great.

  • Periodically ventilate your home by opening windows and turning on the bathroom fans that pull the air outside as well as the hood fan over your cooktop

  • vacuum at least once or twice a week and be sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter 

  • consider purchasing an Air purfier

  • change your air filters - these get clogged over time and lose their ability to trap dust and airborne irritants / so it’s recommended to clean or purchase new filters every 6 months.

3) Introduce a PEACEFUL atmosphere

Your home should be a retreat from your hectic day. It should provide a place of comfort and enjoyment so that you can have fun with your family and re-energize for the next day. One way to ensure that your home is refuge rather than a place of stress is to introduce calm into your spaces at home.


Some simple ways to do that are to:

  • de-clutter and organize your space

  • decorate with calming colors

  • use natural materials in your furnishings and decor

  • bring in some household plants

  • showcase meaningful pieces of art or photographs that spark joy when you see them


4) Use Non-Toxic Products

As health more health conscious mamas like yourself become aware of the amount of toxic elements we are exposed to on a daily basis, we will demand safer products for our families. Just like our food, we want to know what is in our beauty and cleaning products. We are reading labels and asking questions. We are voting with our dollars by investing in and purchasing products that may or may not cost a little more up front but are infinitely better for our families overall well being and long term health.


5) Consider your LIGHT sources

Everyone loves a light filled home which is why large picture windows and skylights have become so popular over the years. Natural light gives us energy and lightens our mood. And while artificial light sources are necessary, lots of research has been done on how artificial light sources can have negative effects on our overall well being by disrupting our natural circadian rhythms. Just like the sunset, a warm orangey color helps us relax, produce melatonin and signal our bodies that it is time to sleep. Blue light does just the opposite and signals to our minds that it's daylight and time to be awake. Simple steps you can take to get a better night's sleep:

  • Use warm yellow-orange bulbs in your bedroom for reading at night

  • use apps on your computer like f.lux that will gradually reduce the amount of blue-light emitted from your desktop at night

  • set up Apple's night shift on your phone or iPad - it also eliminates the blue light by introducing more red on a slider so you will see a more orangey glow

We can't always control the amount of toxins we are exposed to in the environment, but we can have some control over the amount we allow in our homes. Becoming aware is the first step to improving, implementing small changes is the next step.
